Coerced sterilization cases to be heard in Namibia’s High Court 1-4 June
April 20, 2010
The High Court will hear the cases of six HIV positive women who were allegedly subjected to coerced sterilization at public hospitals in Namibia from 1-4 June. The women are asking that the government compensate them for violating their rights under the Namibian Constitution. Unfortunately, these six women are not the only HIV positive women in Namibia who have been coercively sterilized at public hospitals. The Namibian Women’s Health Network has documented dozens of such cases, some that occurred as recently as last year. Given that, the outcome of the court case will be incredibly important in ending this practice. For more information on the cases and the campaign to end forced sterilisation click here.
